About the show

The Utah RV Sportsmen's Vacation & RV Show is the long-running winter RV and outdoor expo for the Salt Lake Valley. The show dates back to 1965. Greenband Enterprises, a Holladay company that also runs the Utah Boat Show, produces it, and it fills the Mountain America Exposition Center in Sandy for four days each February.

The organizer puts the RV floor at more than 300,000 square feet, which makes it one of the easier places in the region to compare many brands and dealers in a single visit. Expect motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels and toy haulers alongside pickup trucks, RV accessories, and booths for resorts, lodges and hunting and fishing guides.

What to expect

The 2027 show opens on a Thursday afternoon and runs late on Friday and Saturday, closing at 6 pm on Sunday. Past editions have added side attractions such as fly fishing demonstrations by a local club, a drawing for an Alaska fishing trip, and live reptile and bird presentations, so check the show's features page closer to February for the current lineup.

Thursday and Friday afternoons are usually the quieter times to walk through the large coaches. Saturday tends to be the busiest day, which is also the only day the organizer lists a parking shuttle.

Before you go

Adult tickets are cheaper online than at the door, and children 12 and under get in free with a paying adult. Each ticket covers one day, with same-day re-entry by hand stamp. Pets are not allowed inside, so plan for them before you leave camp.

Nights in February usually drop below freezing here. If you camp, protect your fresh water hose and tanks, and bring layers for early mornings in the RV lot. Snow is common, so check road conditions before you drive the rig in.

Typical weather: NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals, measured at COTTONWOOD WEIR, UT US, 6.2 miles from the venue.

Getting there and big-rig parking

RV parking not confirmed. Mountain America Exposition Center, 9575 State St, Sandy, UT 84070.

Confirmed on the show's parking page: the expo center offers free parking on its own lots, and extra free parking is open in a garage southwest of the building during show hours, with a shuttle from there on Saturday only. Paid parking may also be available at Jordan Commons, north of the hall. The page does not mention motorhomes, trailers or oversized vehicles, and it says nothing about overnight parking.

Suggestion, not confirmed: a parking garage will not take a 40 foot motorhome or a truck and fifth wheel, and the main lots fill on Saturday. The safest plan is to leave the rig at an RV park such as Mountain Shadows in Draper, about 5 miles south, and drive the tow car or pickup in. If you must bring a big rig, arrive at opening on Thursday or Friday, ask the lot attendants where long vehicles may go, and do not plan to stay overnight.

Around Sandy

Sandy sits at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley, right below the Wasatch Range, so a February trip to the show pairs well with winter in the mountains.

The mouths of Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons are a short drive east of the expo center, and the ski areas up those canyons are in full season during show week. The canyon roads are steep and often under traction rules in winter, so leave the RV in the valley and go up in a car or on a ski bus.

Closer to the hall, Jordan Commons to the north has a movie theater and restaurants, and the soccer stadium across 9400 South is just beyond the parking lots. The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper makes an easy indoor stop on a cold day, and downtown Salt Lake City, with Temple Square and the state capitol, is about 15 miles north on I-15. A TRAX light rail line runs along State Street past the expo center, which is handy if you would rather not drive into downtown.

Most forest campgrounds in the canyons close for the winter, so RVers usually base themselves at a valley RV park that stays open all year.

Tips for visiting

  • Buy adult tickets online ahead of time; the organizer lists them at $13 on its site against a $15 regular price, with no service fee.
  • Leave pets at camp or with a sitter, because the show does not allow them inside the hall.
  • The extra free parking the organizer lists is in a garage, which will not take a tall motorhome or a trailer, so bring your tow car or pickup rather than the rig.
  • Watch for winter storms on the Wasatch Front in February and check road conditions before towing anything on I-15.
  • If you are shopping for a fifth wheel, write down your truck's payload and towing ratings from the door sticker before you walk the floor.
