About the show

The Reno Outdoor & Adventure Expo is a winter consumer show in Reno, Nevada, produced by Lockett Shows of Carson City. The 2027 edition is billed as the 60th annual and runs January 14 to 17 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on South Virginia Street.

Several shows share the halls under one admission. The Reno RV Show & Sale is the anchor for RV shoppers, and it gets the building to itself on Thursday before the other shows open. From Friday through Sunday it is joined by an overland expo, an off-road and motorsports expo, and boats, along with exhibitors selling camping gear, accessories, storage, repair services and travel.

What to expect

RV shoppers can compare motorhomes, travel trailers and camp trailers from local dealers, then walk over to see built-out overland vans, truck campers and off-road rigs. That mix makes it a useful stop for anyone weighing a traditional RV against a smaller go-anywhere setup. Clubs, marinas, resorts and safety groups also take booths.

Timing your visit

Thursday is the day to go if RVs are your only interest, since the floor is limited to the RV show and crowds are usually lighter. Saturday tends to draw the biggest crowds once every show is open. The halls open at 10 am each day and close at 6 pm, except Sunday, when they close an hour earlier.

Admission can be bought online in advance, or you can download a discount coupon from the ticket page and save at the door.

Weather

Typical weather in January

Average low

Nights in January usually drop below freezing here. If you camp, protect your fresh water hose and tanks, and bring layers for early mornings in the RV lot. Snow is common, so check road conditions before you drive the rig in.

Typical weather: NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals, measured at RENO TAHOE INTL AP, NV US, 1.1 miles from the venue.

Getting there and big-rig parking

RV parking not confirmed. Reno-Sparks Convention Center, 4590 South Virginia Street, Reno, NV 89502.

Confirmed on the venue's page and parking map: parking is $10 per space per day, cashless only. The map shows lots A, B, B1, B2, C, E and F around the halls; the listed counts add up to about 2,150 spaces, and Lot D has no count. Lot C, across Peckham Lane to the north and reached from gates 5 and 6, is the largest at 916 spaces. Gate 1 opens off South Virginia Street, and Lot E runs along Kietzke Lane. Neither the show nor the venue says whether motorhomes or trailers may park, or whether overnight parking is allowed.

Suggestion, not confirmed: a 40 foot motorhome or a truck and fifth wheel has the best chance of fitting in Lot C, where it can take spaces at the far edge. Expect to pay for each space you take up. Arrive at 10 am opening, and if the lots look tight, leave the rig at an RV park such as the one at Grand Sierra Resort, about 3 miles north, and drive back in. Do not plan to stay overnight on the convention center lots.

Around Reno

The convention center sits in midtown Reno, a little over 2 miles from both downtown and the airport, so a show day fits easily around other plans.

The Atlantis Casino Resort is joined to the convention center by a sky bridge, which is handy for a warm meal on a cold January day. Downtown Reno has the Truckee River Walk, the National Automobile Museum and a cluster of casinos and restaurants. In Sparks, the Victorian Square district and the paved path around Sparks Marina make for an easy afternoon walk.

Winter is ski season in the Sierra. The Mount Rose Highway climbs from south Reno toward the ski area and Lake Tahoe, about 32 miles away at Incline Village, but the road is steep and often snowy, so take a car rather than the rig. Virginia City, the old Comstock mining town, is a popular half-day trip southeast of Reno, with boardwalk shops and saloons, though the grade up is steep and winding.

If you are towing in from California, I-80 over Donner Summit can close or require chains during storms, so build a spare day into your plans.

Tips for visiting

  • Go on Thursday, January 14, if you only want to shop RVs; the other shows do not open until Friday.
  • Download the $5 discount coupon from the ticket page if you plan to pay at the door, since online tickets carry a service fee.
  • Budget for parking: the convention center charges $10 per vehicle per day and takes cards and phone wallets only.
  • Lot C, across Peckham Lane on the north side, is the largest lot on the venue map and the best bet for finding several open spaces in a row.
  • Watch the forecast for the Sierra passes if you are towing in from California, because January storms often close or restrict I-80 over Donner Summit.
