About the show

Overland Expo West is the flagship spring event of the Overland Expo series and one of the largest gatherings in the country for people who travel and camp off the pavement. The 2027 edition runs Friday through Sunday, May 14 to 16, at Fort Tuthill County Park, a pine-covered county park just south of Flagstaff, Arizona, at close to 7,000 feet.

What to expect

The show spreads across open ground and forest rather than an exhibit hall. Expect long rows of built-out trucks, adventure vans, rooftop tents, off-road trailers and truck campers, plus vendors selling lighting, recovery gear, fridges, solar setups and camp kitchens. Motorcycle travel has its own area. Alongside the exhibits, the event is known for its classes: hands-on sessions and talks on off-road driving, vehicle recovery, navigation, cooking and trip planning, some of which need a separate ticket.

Many visitors camp on site for the whole weekend, which gives the event a campground feel in the evenings. Others stay in Flagstaff or in nearby forest campgrounds and drive in each day.

Before you go

The grounds open at 9 a.m. each day and close at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, so the last day is a short one. Check the official page for ticket types and camping passes before making plans, since camping and class tickets can sell out ahead of the event.

Getting there and big-rig parking

RV parking not confirmed. Fort Tuthill County Park, 2446 Fort Tuthill Loop, Flagstaff, AZ 86005.

Nothing here is confirmed: neither the producer's site nor the county park's site could be read for this record.

Suggestion, not confirmed: Fort Tuthill is a forested county park with a county campground on the grounds, a military recreation area next door and wide areas of dirt and gravel that the event uses for exhibits and camping. A 40 foot motorhome or a truck and fifth wheel should expect trees, uneven ground and possible soft spots after rain or late snow. Check the producer's camping rules for any length limit before you go. If the event camping is full or does not suit a large rig, Flagstaff RV parks a few miles north along Route 66 are the fallback, with the tow car or truck used for the short drive to the gate. Overnight parking outside paid camping should not be assumed.

Around Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a mountain town at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, surrounded by one of the largest ponderosa pine forests in the world, and it makes a fine base for a longer stay after the show.

The Grand Canyon's South Rim is roughly 80 miles north and an easy day trip with a tow car. Closer to town, Walnut Canyon National Monument has cliff dwellings along a loop trail, and the loop road north of town links Sunset Crater Volcano and the pueblo ruins of Wupatki National Monument, with lava fields and wide views along the way. Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill offers daytime tours and evening telescope viewing, and Flagstaff was the first city named an International Dark Sky City.

Historic downtown sits on old Route 66 and the railroad, with breweries, outfitters and restaurants, though street parking for long rigs is tight, so bring the smaller vehicle. Sedona and its red rock trails are about 30 miles south; reach them by I-17 and State Route 179 rather than the steep canyon road on 89A. Spring weather can swing from warm sun to snow flurries in the same week.

Tips for visiting

  • Plan for cold nights at elevation; spring lows near Flagstaff often dip close to freezing, so bring a working furnace or warm bedding.
  • Check the producer's rules on vehicle length before bringing a 40 foot motorhome or a long fifth wheel, since the grounds are wooded and many lanes are unpaved.
  • Arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks; hookups on the event grounds should not be assumed.
  • Avoid State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon with a big rig on a side trip to Sedona; its switchbacks are tight, and I-17 is the easier way down.
  • Wind and dust are common on spring afternoons, so stow awnings when you leave camp.
