About the show

The Black Hills Sports Show & Outdoor Expo is a winter outdoor show in Rapid City, South Dakota, aimed at hunters, anglers, campers and families who spend their summers in the Black Hills. It is a broad outdoor expo rather than a dealer-only RV show, so expect gear, guides and outfitters alongside any campers or trailers on display.

The 2027 show runs Friday through Sunday, February 12 to 14, in The Summit Arena at The Monument, Rapid City's civic and event complex on North Mount Rushmore Road, a short drive from Interstate 90 and close to downtown. The Monument has several arenas and halls under one roof, which lets a show of this kind spread out across more than one space.

Hours and admission

The show opens at noon on Friday and runs until 9 p.m., then goes 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $11. Check the official site for the exhibitor list before you go.

Coming in an RV

February in western South Dakota is cold and often snowy, and many campgrounds in the Black Hills close for the season. If you are bringing a rig, confirm that your campground is open and that its water and sewer are not shut off for winter, and watch the forecast on Interstate 90 before you set out.

Weather

Typical weather in February

Average high
38.3°F
Average low

Precipitation

Snow

Nights in February usually drop below freezing here. If you camp, protect your fresh water hose and tanks, and bring layers for early mornings in the RV lot. Snow is common, so check road conditions before you drive the rig in.

Typical weather: NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals, measured at RAPID CITY WFO, SD US, 1.3 miles from the venue.

Getting there and big-rig parking

RV parking not confirmed. The Monument, 444 North Mount Rushmore Road, Rapid City, SD 57701.

Nothing about RV or oversized parking is confirmed for this show. The organizer's site and the venue's directions and parking page both refused our requests, so no parking rules, entrances or overnight policy were read. The venue's own pages do confirm its address on North Mount Rushmore Road in Rapid City.

Suggestion, not confirmed: The Monument sits on the edge of downtown, where lots fill quickly during a large event and street parking will not fit a 40 foot motorhome or a truck and fifth wheel. The simplest plan is to leave the rig at a campground and drive the tow vehicle or a toad to the show. Do not count on overnight parking at the venue, and allow extra stopping and turning room on snowy or icy streets.

Around Rapid City

Rapid City is the gateway to the Black Hills, and even in February there is plenty to do between visits to the show floor.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is about 25 miles southwest and stays open in winter, with far fewer visitors than in summer. Downtown, the life-size bronze statues of past presidents line the street corners and make an easy walk, and Main Street Square usually runs an outdoor ice rink in the colder months. The Journey Museum covers the geology and Lakota history of the region, and the Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines has a well known fossil collection.

For a longer outing, Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop Road is a good place to spot bison, pronghorn and burros, and Badlands National Park is a little over an hour east on Interstate 90. Spearfish Canyon, northwest of town, is striking with snow and frozen waterfalls. In winter some scenic roads, including the Needles Highway, close for the season, and others in the Hills have tight tunnels and switchbacks that do not suit big rigs, so check before taking a coach in.

Tips for visiting

  • Plan around the short Sunday: the show closes at 3 p.m. on the last day, so save Saturday for a full look.
  • Call ahead to make sure your Rapid City campground is open in winter and ask whether water hookups are frozen or shut off.
  • Carry tire chains or plan a weather day; winter storms can close stretches of Interstate 90 across western South Dakota.
  • Downtown event parking can be tight for a long rig, so leave the motorhome or fifth wheel at your campground and drive the tow vehicle or toad in.
